The Art of War

Chris as Sol Invictus. Mosaic of the Vatican grottoes under St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, on the ceiling of the tomb of the Julii.

Went for a walk with Osiris and he told me the facts of life. He said:

Dismemberment is the beginning
of understanding the spiritual things.

Your legs are ranged across the Black Hills
your arms dispersed in softball fields.

Your tongue, thankfully, is in the South of France
tasting blood orange and chèvre and St. Emilion.

Your ears have their own carved sedilia in the choir
at Winchester Cathedral, observing daily Evensong.

Not even a god can tell you where
your heart your mind dwells

but I can tell you this: you won’t
reassemble by yourself. It can’t be done

without a goddess
without a sacred river
without a holy land.
